On any given day, any team can beat any other team. That's what happened for the men's ice hockey team a few weeks ago - twice. On Jan. 8, in front of 3,700 at Mellon Arena during the College Hockey Showcase, the Colonials pulled off what seemed to be an impossible task for a 3-12-2 team (at the time) to do.
Last year, the RMU men's basketball found success with a formula that included experience and leadership. With a lineup full of decorated and highly-touted seniors and juniors, it was a rare sight to see a freshman or sophomore have an impact on the outcome of a game, let alone crack the starting lineup.
Prior to this past weekend, the Colonials women's hockey team had been victorious in just one of their previous 14 games. For inspiration, members of the team sought out former RMU goaltender and current U.S. Olympian Brianne McLaughlin, who delivered just as she had done throughout her career as a Colonial.
The past two weeks have been pretty good to the Lady Colonials. Not only did they help their coach, Sal Buscaglia, celebrate his 600th career victory with their win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Jan. 14, but their stellar play, which includes wins in six of their last seven games and a 12-7 overall record, has propelled them into a first-place tie with Sacred Heart in the NEC standings.
The Robert Morris women's basketball team celebrated a great accomplishment on Jan. 14 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Their 79-50 win was not only their fourth straight victory but it also added another milestone to the impressive résumé of coach Sal Buscaglia, which already includes 19 20-win seasons, 12 conference championships and 14 national tournament appearances.
Nearly a year ago, Jeremy Chappell was immersed in his studies preparing for his last round of final exams. At the same time, he was attempting to maintain a level of play on the basketball court capable of carrying Robert Morris to a Northeast Conference title and an NCAA Tournament birth.
As the Colonials look forward to finally competing in the NEC in 2011, their focus this season will be on making a name for themselves as they take on some of the toughest competition in the country. Last season, Robert Morris recorded its first winning season with a 9-6 record and looks to become even stronger this season by taking on teams from the Big Ten and the ACC, including Virginia and Duke, who were both participants in the 2009 NCAA final four.
So far, 2010 has not been kind to the Robert Morris University women's hockey team, as they have dropped their first six of the New Year. After dropping two games to Ohio State University the previous weekend, the Colonials returned to action on Jan. 8 as they took on the University of Connecticut at Mellon Arena as part of the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase.
This past weekend the Robert Morris University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Robert Morris Invitational at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The men earned 10 top-three finishes while the women took home 13 top-three standings against some pretty solid competition from Seton Hill, IUP, West Liberty College, Geneva, Youngstown State and Carnegie Mellon On the men's side of things, junior Dewitt Hudson opened up the meet with a first-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in a season-best time of 7.
Senior guard Angela Pace, a member of the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season on Jan. 9. The Westchester, New York native received the other two honors earlier this season against Akron and Stony Brook (Nov.
