Robert Morris University's Office of Residence Life hosted the 1st annual conference for resident assistants of area colleges this past Saturday in the Sewall Center.

The participating colleges, which included Carlow, Carnegie Mellon, Chatham, CCAC, Duquesne, La Roche, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Point Park, Pitt and Robert Morris, are members of the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education (PCHE).

"The conference allowed resident assistants to share ideas, compare and contrast experiences, learn more about the impact RAs have on various campuses and to network with one another," said Assistant Director of Residence Life Matt Ireland.

The event, titled "Bridging Campus Connections," was the first of its kind for RAs in the area.

"The PCHE Residence Life committee thought it would be a great idea to put together the conference to extend the learning and networking opportunities to these very important student-staff members," explained Ireland.

"I feel that PCHE succeeded in organizing a great conference that provided the opportunity for different RAs from different institutions to share their unique insights and information with each other," said Chaquica Shipman, a resident assistant at Chatham University.

At the conference were 149 attending RAs from Chatham, Duquesne, La Roche, Point Park, Pitt and RMU, many of whom are giving presentations about programming, confronting and building community.

The seminars that RAs participated in involved conflict management, programming, resume planning and diversity.

"The PCHE RA Conference helped RAs from all participating institutions share ideas, develop and refine skills, provide new perspectives and learn from one another's experiences," said Ireland.

"People really connected and learned from each other and it was evident in the vibes between RAs," Shipman said.

The event's keynote speaker, Dr. Terry Thomas, professor of biblical studies at Geneva College, delivered a speech about why people become RAs.
