The Robert Morris University volleyball team ended their Northeast Conference with a perfect 8-0 record. In their win over Quinnipiac, the Colonials clinched the regular season chanpionship, and with their win over Central Connecticut State, they went undefeated for good measure.
In the Quinnipiac match, the Colonials dominated from the start. Outside hitters Emily Wolthius and Charla Drabant led the way with a combined 27 kills.
The Bobcats never had the lead in the first set and the Colonials won the first set 25-18. The second set proved to be more dominating than the first as RMU won 25-14 with Wolthius leading the way with five kills. In the third and ultimately final set, the Colonials dominated the match again, winning 25-18. Drabant set a personal high with eight kills in the third set.
Despite already wrapping up the NEC volleyball regular season title, the Colonials did not get complacent and showed Central Connecticut State why they were the class of the NEC.
The Blue Devils provided a scare for RMU in the first set, but the Colonials won the set 25-21. Wolthius and Drabant shared the lead with five kills a piece in that set.
In the second set, the Blue Devils took a step back after their competitive first set. The Colonials defense would not allow CCSU to gain any upper hand and had an answer for everything the Blue Devils tried.
The Colonials had a scare in the third set as the Blue Devils led for most of the set. The determination and veteran team of RMU found their poise and finished the third set with a 25-21 win, sweeping Central Connecticut State and celebrating their undefeated conference record.
Along with Drabant and Wolthius, freshman setter finished the day with a double-double. Bennett also finished with five blocks.
The Colonials will now host the 2008 NEC Tournament. They have earned the first round bye and will await the winner of the St. Francis (Pa.) and Sacred Heart. The winner will face RMU at the Sewall Center on November 22.
