The band Solace is nothing short of an amazing rock band. Packing shows since their founding, they are birthing a new type of down and dirty rock 'n' roll to the Pittsburgh music scene. I got the rare chance of finding out the facts about the band from one of the founders, Asa Paulovich.
KR: What is your band's name and where did it come from?
AP: I was searching for a name and was really drawing a blank. I put out an online request for band names and I got one that suggested "Solace." I looked up the definition and it was defined as peace or comfort, and the sentence it was used in said the music brought solace. So, I felt it was a godsend.
KR: Who are your band members, and what do they do?
AP: Asa Paulovich- Founder, Lyrics, Lead Guitar, Backing vocals
Steve Husselton- Drums, backing vocals
Pete Birchler- Lead Guitar
Rob Birchler- Lead vocals, Lyrics
KR: How and where did you meet?
AP: Steve the drummer and I met through a mutual friend, but actually, I already knew Steve. Neither of us knew that the other was a musician. Rob I knew my whole life. [He's] one of my brother's friends, and when I was forming the band, I saw Rob at a basketball game. He was decked in cowboy boots and hat, and I said "Want to start a band?" And he said yes. He originally was the bassist. Pete is Rob's brother, and once he moved back from Chiropractic school, he joined the band.
KR: What made you decide to start a band?
AP: I was tired of giving lessons and playing all the parts on the songs I wrote. I wanted other insight.
KR: What was your first show like?
AP: Our first show was great. We packed the place out -- about 200 people showed up.
KR: What are practices like?
AP: Practices are very constructive. It depends on what we are working on. If we are working for a show, we run through a set list and answer anyone's questions. Most of the time, we work on new material. If we are planning on going to the studio, a lot of [the] time we will play to a click [track] to get really tight. Other times, we go to my studio and play with ideas. Oh, we all usually eat dinner together first and hang out for a little after
