America, take a seat

On Friday, Nov. 26, 2008, Black Friday to be precise, a security guard was trampled to death in Long Island Wal-Mart by a stampede of shoppers.
In a very morbid way, America may have received its just desserts. If ever there was a time to pause and appreciate what we have, it is the holiday season, but given recent events one might be given pause. If I remember correctly, this is exactly why we celebrate Thanksgiving.
I find this whole unfortunate scenario ironic. Everyone is so concerned with the deals they can get that no one takes the time to just chill. Each holiday season, we try to be mindful of our loved ones and embrace the holiday spirit. Many may be unaware of this fact, but the stores that you have to get to at 5 a.m. will still be there on December 1. Now, if you don't believe me feel free to camp out for next year. I actually understand the varying arguments against waiting to buy Christmas presents. The economy is in the tank and the need to buy one's presents early would not only stimulate the economy to a degree, but end your holiday shopping early. There are also those deals, but this is one area where people should be warned to exercise control, especially in light of recent events.
Now before I go any further, let me preface this by saying I love Christmas. I am the first one to wear my Santa hat and matching red apron at work. I have "Santa Baby," "Baby, it's Cold Outside," "Feliz Navidad," "Linus and Lucy" and "All I want for Christmas is You," on my Ipod. I think people want to punch me after I have sung my favorite Christmas carol for the hundredth time. As a side note, I hate Christmas carolers and feel they should be banned in the United States. They simply annoy me. With that said, let the ranting begin. America, you are not only on timeout, but you have been put ON NOTICE! This trademark comes from Stephen Colbert, and he should be thankful for his truthiness. The U.S. is on notice for being mentally handicapped during the holiday season. I am staging an intervention. There is nothing wrong with loving Christmas, but America, you smother it.
