The Diversity Council, now called the Council on Institutional Equity (COIE), met in the International Suite on Jan. 19 to discuss diversity and community.
Dr. Rex Crawley, assistant dean of the school of communication and information systems and department head of communications, hosted the meeting and introduced his concern for diversity.
"It's important to develop ourselves in our groups before we are to empower others in the community," said Crawley.
Crawley's interest in diversity focuses heavily on the African experience, particularly in African men. During the meeting, there were 11 sub-committees present, including committees on sexual orientation, student demographics, disabilities, international, religion, employment/hiring, curriculum, contracts, race ethnicity, programming, and gender.
The individuals serving on the committee included participants in the school of nursing, education, communication, and business. Crawley had each individual on each sub-committee introduce themselves and explain their purpose for being there.
Francis Burniside, the visiting Rooney Scholar, was the special guest of the evening. Burnside is a Navajo from Pine Springs, Arizona.
"We never distinguish color, we just say the five finger, that's what we are," Burnside stated in the beginning of the meeting.
The meeting emphasized the importance of diversity and accepting each individual, but also showing how each individual unites with the next.
"Everything has life. We all see that table. We all see that chair," said Burnside, as he introduced himself to all the sub-committees.
Burnside showed his excitement for partaking in the meeting by making a fairly longer introduction than the rest. Francis Burnside showed his appreciation for all the sub-committee members and thanked everyone for being who they are.
"Thank you all and the sacredness of you all," Burnside said at the end of his introduction.
The sub-committees introduced themselves individually and explained what their purpose of joining the council was. The committees focused on discussing their role in society as a participant in creating awareness of diversity around campus.
