The start of the spring semester at Robert Morris University to the majority of the student body, faculty and staff means starting new classes, making new friends and looking forward to the warm weather that will soon come our way.
To the Greek life community, however, the start of the spring semester means spring recruitment and finding students that missed the opportunity to join a Greek organization during the fall semester.
"Spring recruitment gives an opportunity for those students who missed fall recruitment to be involved in Greek life," said Charles Nash, area coordinator for the office of residence life.
Nash is an alumn of Alpha Tau Omega, Theta Gamma chapter of Duquesne University, and was also the Graduate Assistant advisor to the InterFraternity Council at the University of Pittsburgh.
At RMU, the process of recruitment in the spring is a lot different than the procedure of the formal fall recruitment. Within the fraternities and sororities, there are several differences between the informal recruitment practices.
"Each council works with the University to establish recruitment programs for the recognized chapters at RMU. There will be a series of recruitment events hosted by each of the chapters for all interested prospective members throughout the month of January," said Ronald Shidemantle, director of residence life and RMU fraternity advisor.
Shidemantle is an active member of Theta Xi National Fraternity, in which he was affiliated with his first semester as an undergraduate at Slippery Rock University.
According to a brother of Kappa Delta Rho and the 2009 RMU Interfraternity Council President, Nathan Ekis, this spring fraternities are having a combination of formal and informal recruitment. Basically, students that are potential new members will be able to come up to each organization to their suite or other area and learn and meet the different fraternities.
Sororities at RMU follow a casual process, referred to as, continuous open bidding.
