The Robert Morris University softball team has been selected to finish second in the Northeast Conference coaches poll, which was released last Wednesday. The Colonials finished 12-6 and second in the NEC last season, and return one All-NEC honoree and 10 underclassmen in 2010.
The Blackbirds of Long Island University were once again voted as the preseason favorite to capture the NEC regular season title for the fourth consecutive year. Long Island has won the NEC softball championship an unprecedented 14 times under the direction of sixteenth year head coach, Roy Kortmann.
For the third year in a row, Robert Morris has been chosen to finish in second place. However, this year the Colonials share the second slot with the 2009 NEC Champions, Sacred Heart.
The Colonials will enter 2010 under the direction of head coach Craig Coleman, who returns for his twentieth season at the helm of the RMU softball program. Also returning for the campaign is sophomore pitcher Alexa Bryson, who was named to the All-NEC second team in 2009. Bryson ranked second in the league with 193 strikeouts and tied for the top spot with 19 victories, while posting a 2.47 ERA in her first year. The 2008 NEC Rookie of the year, Jessica Calderone, will also be returning for her sophomore year after an injury forced her to sit out the 2009 season.
The Colonials will open the 2010 season on Friday, March 5 against Florida International and Central Michigan in the USF Under Armour Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.
