RMU's recent ice hockey success over top-ranked opponent Miami of Ohio created a buzz around the campus about the sport. Robert Morris University alum Brianne McLaughlin's goaltending for the women's team caused a stir. People want to see more hockey, and with the intensity of Olympic Games, especially in Canada, shows the sport at its brightest.
The hype surrounding the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games continues to revolve around ice hockey. Ice hockey's popularity continues to grow in the Pittsburgh area, especially in the Robert Morris Community. The men's hockey tournament will undoubtedly be one for the ages. Olympic hockey is like several all-star games with tenfold the intensity level. Players from the NHL and other super leagues scattered across Europe combine talents, which implicates spectacular hockey.
Most hockey fans seem to be crowning Team Canada, lead by Sidney Crosby and Martin Brodeur, as automatic champions, but team Russia and team USA could prove to be worthy opponents of the powerhouse.
Team Russia's roster includes some incredibly talented players. Big names such as Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, and Ilya Kovalchuk construct a force that matches well with any team. Russian players view Olympic hockey as the pinnacle of their careers. Their minds all dream of gold metals and Russian pride. This team is phenomenal in every facet of their game and will be, in my opinion, the greatest challenge to Team Canada. Nothing gets a team going like an 8-2 pummeling of Latvia to start play.
The United States team posted a poor showing last time out, finishing with only one win and three losses. This year, the US team consists of many young players, such as Bobby Ryan and Eric Staal. Pittsburgh native Ryan Malone also holds a spot on the scrappy, grinding team, which so far is 2-0. With wins over Switzerland and Norway, the USA plans to surprise the hockey world with a strong Olympic showing in Vancouver.
With all of that said, Canada's team seems unstoppable. Sidney Crosby, Martin Brodeur, Jarome Iginla, amongst many other superstars combined into a dream team. Every position filled with sensational talent and speed. Canada'a club is the most dangerous, and judging by their initial play, they will be solid no matter the opponent. Vancouver, as well as all of Canada fully expects nothing but victory.
