Track & Field Finish Season at NEC Championships

This past weekend, the Robert Morris University men's and women's track and field teams closed out the 2009-10 indoor season competing in the Northeast Conference Championships. The men finished with 45 points for an eight-place finish, while the women accumulated 44.50 points for a sixth-place spot. Long Island and Monmouth grabbed gold and silver on both the men's and women's side, respectively.
For the men, the RMU pole vault crew of Chris Spataro, Jared George and Anthony Trunzo all performed well, earning the first,third and fourth place, respectively. Spataro claimed gold with a season-best mark of 4.75 meters and George leaped to a season-best height of 4.65 meters to earn bronze, which tied a personal best for the sophomore. Trunzo took the fourth spot with a mark of 4.45 meters.
T.J. Green finished well in the 60-meter dash, earning the sixth spot with a time of 7.09; however, he finished with a time of 7.06 in the preliminaries. In the 800-meter run, Michael Robinson placed sixth with a time of 1:57.03 and in the one-mile Ben Ingle also earned an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:25.51 after finishing with a mark of 4:23.67 in the prelims.
Dewitt Hudson earned bronze in the 60-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in a time of 8.42. In the throwing events freshman Brendan Morales took fifth with a mark of 14.92 meters and Collin Ray took the sixth spot with a mark of 14.91 meters. Senior Michael Bowman performed well in the weight throw and earned the seventh spot with a heave of 15.78 meters and freshman Stephen Mitchell placed eighth with a mark 15.78 meters.
The RMU women dominated the pole vault event with senior Erica Schmidt taking the gold finish with a new RMU record of 3.45 meters. Casey Folga and Sarah Lueck finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with marks of 3.05 meters while Anna Samole and Tausha Bowser tied for eighth with a height of 2.90 meters.
Gabriella Rinehart represented Robert Morris in the throwing events by tossing a first-place mark of 17.63 meters in the weight throw, which was a season-best for the sophomore. She also placed eighth in the shot put with a mark of 11.85 meters. In the 5000-meter run freshman Kristie Domis placed sixth with a time of 18:36.23, and in the 60-meter hurdles Taylor Crawford took fifth with a season-best time of 8.99.
Spataro, Schmidt and Rinehart will compete in the 2010 ECAC Championships, held in Boston. Mass. on March 6 and 7, due to their victories in their respective events.
